Essendon has a specific role for Jye Caldwell in 2021, the 20 year old was traded to the Bombers last week after 2 years at the Giants.

Caldwell was originally selected in the 2018 AFL Draft at pick 11, he played 11 games at the Giants.

The Essendon coaching staff recruited Caldwell to fill a specific need as an inside midfielder, he will now join the centre bounce rotation of Dylan Shiel, Andrew McGrath, Zach Merrett & Darcy Parish for the 2021 season.

“They’ve said to me that I’ll be playing that inside-mid role that I’ve been wanting to play for the last couple of years.”

“They’ve also said I could be playing different positions as well just to be more versatile, but they’re honing in on that inside-mid role for me.” Jye Caldwell on talks with Bombers Snr coach Ben Rutten & GM of List & Recruiting Adrian Dodoro.

Caldwell (Age: 20) has averaged 12.5 Disposals, 3.1 Marks & 3.8 Tackles from 11 career games, he played 9 games in 2020.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Jye Caldwell averaged 54.2pts from 9 games at the Giants in 2020, he scored a season high 75pts in Round 3 against the Bulldogs.

The failed trade of Josh Dunkley to Essendon further enhances the opportunities for the usage of Caldwell as a pure midfielder, it’s expected he will be used at a moderate to decent rate at centre bounces next season.

Caldwell will likely be a popular selection at Round 1 next season in AFL Fantasy classic, his ADP will likely improve over the pre-season.
