Brisbane may be set for a shake up at the ruck position, Lions GM of Football David Noble on Trade Radio today provided insight as to what the club is thinking with the likely addition of Joe Daniher.

Noble said the Lions were unlikely to change the number of key tall players in the team, with Daniher set to join the club as a restricted free agent the Lions could be set to go with Oscar McInerney as solo ruck with pinch hit support.

Daniher would join Eric Hipwood & Dan McStay as key forwards, this would result in the removal of the second ruck at Brisbane.

When asked specifically on the role Joe Daniher will play Noble was quite expansive in how he views the tall set-up at Brisbane in the future:

“We’ve probably played 2 Rucks in the last sort of couple of years & Oscar (McInerney) has probably been the one we’ve gone back & looked a bit when he first started, we probably had him more forward so we’ve seen a lot of our games where we’ve had 3 tall’s,”

“so we’re keen to add Joe (Daniher) into our forward end with Hipwood & McStay, we think that those 3 can really fit. They all play a slightly different role, Eric & Dan can be the lead up guys, Eric has been able to get up the ground really well this year & been able to bounce back into that forward line.”

“We see Joe as that bit more stay at home (forward).. he can also go in the ruck, so that allows us to think can we go now with 1 Ruck & an additional tall.”

“The number of tall’s in our side probably won’t change, it might be just the make up of what we do ruck & forward, as to what that looks like, but we certainly think there is a big spot there for him to fill.” Lions GM of Football David Noble.

The ruck set-up at Brisbane will be something to watch over the pre-season & the 2021 Marsh Community Series.

McInerney averaged 8.7 Disposals, 1.7 Marks, 3.0 Tackles & 19.2 Hit Outs from 19 games in 2020.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Oscar McInerney averaged 59.7pts in 2020, he scored 80pts or more in 21.1% of games with a season high of 92pts in the Qualifying Final against Richmond.

McInerney averaged 67.5pts when Stefan Martin & Archie Smith did not play in 2020 (6 Games), if the Lions proceed with McInerney as solo Ruck for the 2021 season he would be considered as a value selection at Round 1 in AFL Fantasy classic.

McInerney could be a sleeper in 10 team standard draft leagues.
