AFLRATINGS NEWS: Senior coach Ken Hinkley confirms an increase in midfield usage for Ollie Wines in 2024 (via SEN).

Fantasy Impact

The pre-season for Ollie Wines is progressing well from a health perspective. With the confirmation from Port Adelaide senior coach Ken Hinkley this week that Wines will be used more through the middle of the ground in 2024 it provides a level of uncertainty for other players that were heavily used last season. Hinkley was concerned at the overuse of Zak Butters, Connor Rozee and Jason Horne-Francis throughout the season which may have left their tank empty for finals. Port Adelaide lost both finals comfortably in 2023. A fit Ollie Wines should benefit from a fantasy perspective if he can be used at a strong rate as an inside mid.

AFLRATINGS NEWS: Assistant coach Tyson Goldsack says he expects Ollie Wines to see an increase in midfield usage in 2024.

Fantasy Impact

Wines was severely impacted heading into 2023 following significant off-season knee surgery and a very limited pre-season. The introduction of Jason Horne-Francis into the midfield along with the strong usage of Connor Rozee and Zak Butters resulted in a decline in centre bounces for Wines (2023 Season: 49.7%). Despite playing all 25 games for Port Adelaide last season Wines was managed for playing minutes throughout the year. A move back to a pure inside midfield role is noteworthy and could see a spike in scoring output in 2024. If that move occurred there would need to be a shift in centre bounce numbers for Port Adelaide in 2024.
