Fantasy Impact
While Geelong is happy to feed the news cycle with talk on Tom Stewart playing through the midfield this year their actions throughout pre-season training suggest otherwise. Stewart has recently been utilised exclusively in his regular role in defence in Thursday match simulation over the last couple of weeks. The loss of Esava Ratugolea already puts the Cats down one key defender from last season and moving Stewart out of the area places more strain on the defence. It is expected however that Stewart may be used at times through the middle of the ground when senior coach Chris Scott wants to alter a game situation. Always keep an open mind but Stewart at this stage is headed for another defensive role to start the season.

While Tom Stewart discussed his role today and mentioned his 2023 minimal midfield usage this isn’t a direct role change for the 2024 season. While he’s open to whatever the team needs Stewart is an elite intercept defender and will likely spend most of his time in that role. Stewart was used at 3.8% of team centre bounces in 2023 and averaged 96.3pts from 22 games. Expect a strong scoring output again in 2024.

Lyon referenced the need to impact James Sicily recently and mentioned that Stewart is a similar type of player. Lyon added that they will trust their own ball movement first and will aim to not let Stewart dominate.
Fantasy Impact: Tom Stewart could be on the radar for a shutdown role by the Saints this week. The Saints have shown a tendency to negate several intercepting half-back types across the season with a player assignment but can also direct the ball away from an area of most influence from those types of players. Cooper Sharman could be an option to impact Tom Stewart this week.

Sam Powell-Pepper (Port Adelaide) would be the likely opponent for Stewart this week with others attempting to negate his easy access to the ball as well as controlling ball movement from D50. Stewart has been used at centre bounces recently and could be a move for Geelong senior coach Chris Scott to break any sort of tag.
