Fantasy: The roles for Connor Rozee, Zak Butters, Xavier Duursma & Jackson Mead in 2021

The Port Adelaide midfield is set to evolve in 2021, Power GM of Football Chris Davies today provided an insight into what season 2021 may look like.

The Power will look to develop within their own list with a potentially quite 2020 free agency & trade period, there may be an opportunity to attract a small forward which could end up being Orazio Fantasia.

If the Power do add a small forward that will likely increase the midfield usage for Connor Rozee, Zak Butters & Xavier Duursma. When asked that specific question today Chris Davies responded with “It’s exactly our thinking”.

Davies also elaborated further on their three key 2018 AFL Draft selections:

“(Connor) Rozee was in his Under-16 year crowned the best under 16 player in Australia as a midfielder”

“(Zak) Butters has gone in there probably more than anyone this year & has shown that he brings a dynamic in that midfield that we don’t have and probably is the one who is the closest to providing what we do need in there.”

“And then you’ve got Duurs (Xavier Duursma) who is courageous, also has the outrun capability of getting from contest to contest who is courageous enough I think to go on ball as well.”

Davies provided further thoughts on what adding a small forward would do:

“So if a player of the like of (Orazio) Fantasia or another forward if it’s not him comes into our group we would be seeing the evolution of our groups being those guys to be playing more midfield time.”

Butters averaged 14.6 Disposals from 17 games in 2020, Duursma averaged 13.1 from 15 games & Rozee 12.1 from 16 games.

Another player that was mentioned today was Jackson Mead, after being selected at Pick 25 in the 2019 AFL Draft he did not make his debut in 2020.

“I should mention also we shouldn’t forget Jackson Mead as a player who can slot straight into the midfield, he’s played senior footy already at SANFL level, he’s also got some real positive traits that we think that are going to be good for us.” Chris Davies.

Mead averaged 11.0 Disposals, 5.0 Marks & 3.0 Tackles from 2 games in the SANFL in 2019, he averaged 20.1 Disposals, 3.3 Marks & 3.0 Tackles from 11 games in the SANFL reserves in 2019.

With Travis Boak, Tom Rockliff, Ollie Wines & Sam Powell-Pepper taking the majority of centre bounces in 2020 something would have to shift significantly for others to increase CBA’s at a high level next season, the Power do have a plan in place for the future which may mean a gradual increase for the likes of Connor Rozee, Xavier Duursma & Zak Butters.

Duursma spent quite a bit of time on a wing in 2020, that role may evolve further in 2021.

Butters was used at just 1.8% of total CBA’s in 2020, his contested type game will likely see an increase at CBA’s in 2021.

Rozee was used at 14.2% of total CBA’s in 2020, he adds a sharp dynamic in the midfield but is also a threat forward so his numbers may be similar in 2021.

The additional information from Port Adelaide today likely reduces the potential of Dan Houston returning to CBA’s in 2021, after initially being used at CBA’s in the early part of the 2020 season he moved back to cover for injuries in the Power defence this season & did not return to the midfield.

Jackson Mead is definitely one to add to your watch list in the pre-season, a debut will almost be a certainty in 2021 if he’s fully fit.

Mead will be great value based on a low salary.
