Carlton 8.5 53 v Hawthorn 12.5 77
Ikon Park, February 21
The final margin flattered Carlton as Hawthorn were dominant & more polished in the first half, the margin midway through the game was over 6 goals.
Hawthorn appeared to be fully prepared for opposition, Carlton were a little scratchy unable to move the ball cleanly at times.

New Rules
6-6-6 Start Positions
As expected there were a high number of centre bounces in which players starting Inside 50 didn’t impact the initial contest, there were minimal secondary stoppages inside the centre square after the first bounce.
Players that have a high clearances rate will likely excel under this new rule.

Kick-ins
It seemed as though Carlton were deliberately not using the new rule to full effect or were uncertain against real opposition, the Blues started to open up in the second half running out of the square but with limited behinds scored the sample size is small.
Hawthorn were as sharp as you would expect exploiting the run out of the goal square to the extreme, the destination of the ball landing was generally on the centre wing. Again a limited sample size, but the Hawks were definitely switched on with this rule.
Both clubs didn’t kick the ball through the corridor when kick-ins landed outside the 50m line, players taking kick-ins may be game situational with preferred players sometimes caught out of position.
Quick Numbers
Kick-in from Goal Square: Carlton 2, Hawthorn 1
