Cam Rayner is likely to see a role adjustment in 2021, the former No.1 overall pick in the 2017 AFL draft has spent most of his career in a half-forward type role at the Lions.

Dayne Zorko praised the pre-season of Rayner in an interview this week on SEN, with Zorko likely to move to a more forward role this season there are set to be more opportunities in the midfield at Brisbane.

“I’d love to see him higher up the ground, I think he has so much to offer.”

“He’s obviously worked extremely hard in the last 18 months on getting his body in the best shape possible, he ran a personal best in the time trials this year.”

Rayner was used at 20.7% of Brisbane centre bounces last season, importantly he recorded centre bounce usage in every game that he played.

Zorko was bullish on the impact Rayner has through the middle of the ground & expects a significant increase in usage this season.

“At times last year he played in the midfield & looked really damaging, we’re hoping those minutes can at least double from what I’ve seen so far.”

“He’s certainly putting himself in that bracket to spend a lot of time in that midfield.” Zorko added.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Rayner averaged 51.5pts from 17 games last season, he scored a season high 81pts against Gold Coast in Round 16.

The increase in centre bounce usage will likely result in an increase of fantasy scoring output for Rayner, having played mostly as a forward early in his AFL career we really haven’t seen much of a ceiling or safe points floor which makes him viable for season long fantasy.

With only 1 official pre-season game in 2021 we are only going to get a small sample for Rayner on centre bounce usage & potential scoring ability if his midfield usage is high in just that one game.

At a reasonable price tag with his previous scoring history targeting Rayner may still not be viable for AFL Fantasy classic, but he’s still worth adding to your current watch-list.

Rayner might be worth taking a flyer on very late in 10 team standard draft leagues.
