Braeden Campbell is training in a new position, selected at pick 5 in the 2020 AFL Draft he played most of his junior career as a midfielder.

Sydney senior coach John Longmire provided an update for Campbell on Thursday, a move to a defensive role could be possible early in his AFL career.

“We’re still working through that, we haven’t locked him into one position automatically.”

“He’s been playing defence so far, a bit of midfield & a bit of defence.” John Longmire.

Campbell is a high contested type player, he averaged 15.8 Disposals, 3.0 Marks & 7.0 Tackles in the 2019 NAB League.

Longmire was quite positive on Campbell & his ability to see the game from a new position, adding flexibility of a new role will also assist in the Sydney  midfield rotations.

“The way he’s been able to learn over the last couple of weeks has been important for a player that has generally played a lot of midfield”

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Campbell is tracking well for an early season debut, his fantasy output in the short term with a midfield/half-back role should be very healthy.

The longer term prospects of a prime inside midfield role are likely to provide elite scores, his contested numbers will be strong over his career.

The move of Campbell to a defensive role likely strengthens the increase in midfield usage for Callum Mills, fantasy coaches are also waiting to see a Will Gould debut this season.

Campbell is near an automatic selection if he’s named at Round 1 in AFL Fantasy classic, he’s a decent late round selection in 10 team standard draft leagues & he should be a very high priority early in keeper league drafts.
