According to assistant coach Troy Chaplin on Wednesday the thumb is fine but the risk of infection is still a factor.
“The wound is the biggest thing”

“If it does heal well then he’s a chance to play, if not we just won’t take that risk”
“We’ll give him right up until our captains run” Chaplin said.
Melbourne medical staff will likely make the final call on his availability.
GM of Football Performance Alan Richardson also provided an update on Wednesday.

“He’s coming away, to be honest we’re probably more hopeful than optimistic but we’re going to give him every chance.”
“It depends when you’ve had surgery it’s as much about the scar as it is about the actual initial injury.”
“So that’s really where it sits.”
“We are going to give that every chance given how important he is to us and how important the game is but we’ve got our fingers crossed.” Richardson said.
