2023 AFL Fantasy: Five Players (Pre-season 3)

Five Players is a weekly article to help you make informed decisions for season long AFL Fantasy.

Jason Horne-Francis

We can all ignore what happened last year to Horne-Francis at North Melbourne as it was a mess and subsequently he moved to Port Adelaide in the off-season. Looking to 2023 Horne-Francis is expected to see midfield usage but it is unlikely to be high centre bounce numbers however it might be enough for him to deliver a solid fantasy average. Port Adelaide are set to play a speed transition game which may limit his output.

On the radar.

Darcy Cameron

Cameron should slide into the permanent No.1 ruck position for Collingwood with the departure of Brodie Grundy. Expect Mason Cox to be used forward and through the ruck at times which may limit the potential ceiling for Cameron this season. There is value in his starting salary and of course being able to roster him as a forward does provide ruck cover across the season. Cameron is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury which has interrupted his pre-season however he is expected to be available for Round 1.

Certainly one to consider.

Harry Himmelberg

The coaching staff at GWS are yet to completely decide on the position for Harry Himmelberg which likely answers a very big question. Most will want to know if he is playing forward or defence but there is a third answer right in front of us and that is flexibility. If Himmelberg plays forward it isn’t great, if he provides flexibility changing roles throughout the season then volatile scores are likely with the defensive intercept option left remaining as the only viable fantasy situation. The Giants are also trending towards playing a speed and front-half game so it is likely the slow ball movement out of defence will also go under a new coach.

There may be too much risk here to consider.

Elliot Yeo

A healthy Yeo can certainly deliver strong fantasy scores in either a midfield or half-back role. Based on his starting salary he does represent value but that must come with no injury issues between now and the start of the season. If Yeo hits Round 1 healthy then expect very strong ownership.

Definitely value.

Tim Kelly

West Coast are entering this season in a much better situation than last year which should provide a spike in performance. Tim Kelly is expected to see strong midfield and centre bounce usage which does provide a very good platform to deliver strong fantasy scores. He has not played a full season since 2020 with injuries impacting his scoring output in 2021-22. Many won’t consider Kelly based on recent history but a supremely fit season could provide a strong fantasy average.

On the radar.
