2023 AFL Fantasy: Five Players (Round 2)

Five Players is a weekly article to help you make informed decisions for season long AFL Fantasy.

Tanner Bruhn

Bruhn was used at 41.0% of team centre bounces in Round 1 which has many concerned about his usage. Geelong are dealing with a few injury issues currently which does provide volatility in player roles. Cam Guthrie is likely to see the heaviest usage with a group of other players including Bruhn seeking opportunities.

Hopefully Bruhn can see an increase as an inside mid over the coming weeks but there is no guarantee. Time on ground is also a watch this week.

A concern.

Will Setterfield

Setterfield trained as an inside mid in the first rotation for most of pre-season and that is the way it played out in Round 1 against Hawthorn. He was used at 74.2% of centre bounces recording 25 disposals. Hawthorn were poor in Round 1 which opened up the fantasy scoring for quite a few players including Setterfield.

It will be interesting to see his role against stronger opposition mids and whether or not he will be ball first priority or holding off opposition players to allow the likes of Merrett and Parish to attack the ball. Setterfield recorded just 3 contested possessions in Round 1 which should increase in a more contested type game.

This could go either way.

James Worpel

Worpel had strong usage in the midfield on Sunday against Essendon which included a usage rate of 77.4% at team centre bounces. Hawthorn wasn’t really competitive against the Bombers beyond QT which did result in role changes through the game from senior coach Sam Mitchell.

Interestingly Conor Nash was starting sub and was moved into the midfield throughout his game time which is a reminder that Mitchell will use this season to evaluate the playing list which places extra risk for role changes.

The Round 1 midfield usage for Worpel was great and his score provided excellent value. Hopefully Sam Mitchell holds his role for most of the season which should deliver a strong average.

Plenty to consider before clicking.

Jason Horne-Francis

Horne-Francis was strong in his Port Adelaide debut especially in the second half against Brisbane. He was used at 66.7% of team centre bounces adding a speed/burst dynamic to the midfield core group which was certainly noteworthy in Q3 on Saturday.

His midfield split should remain strong for the near future even with the upcoming return of Travis Boak.

Certainly worth a look.

Jack Ziebell

Ziebell provided stability and direction in defence for the Kangaroos in Round 1. He recorded an equal team high 9 marks along with Harry Sheezel. There seemed to be a good balance out of D50 from a transition and speed perspective by the Kangaroos which if holds should be enough to warrant consideration for North defenders which includes Ziebell.

He scored well even with West Coast recording 46 inside 50 entries which is promising of what could be against stronger teams.

One to consider.
