2023 AFL Fantasy: Five Players (Round 3)

Jack Macrae

We’ve known for quite a while now that senior coach Luke Beveridge does like to mix it up with player roles. The uncertainty does provide elevated risk with several mids including Jack Macrae. The other aspect of concern for Macrae is the current game style which doesn’t allow for repeat disposal opportunities, even more so if his centre bounce opportunities are diminished.
Unfortunately his role may adjust throughout the season which would then provide volatile scores.

A concern.

Liam Stocker

Stocker has been able to slot into the St Kilda defensive structure quite nicely to start the season. The game style under Ross Lyon has provided a sound platform for Stocker to impact from a fantasy perspective. If the Saints are able to continue to press opposition teams and create an additional player at opposition forward 50 entries where possible then Stocker could see plenty of ball come his way, if opposing teams disrupt the St Kilda structure then his scoring could be limited.

Worth considering.

Brody Grundy

With Max Gawn missing with a knee injury for what is expected to be 4-6 weeks the opportunity for Brodie Grundy to put up strong fantasy numbers is available. His exact role will be key to his scoring output.
If Grundy can insert himself as an additional mid in ball transition and sit back behind the ball to assist the defence then his numbers could be quite solid. Keep in mind his previous strong scoring output at Collingwood was played in a slow ball moving style.

A consideration with his opportunity.

Daniel Rioli

With Jayden Short sidelined with a calf injury there is a window of opportunity for Daniel Rioli to take control of the ball in defence for the Tigers. He has averaged 98.5pts from his opening two games which includes an average of 7.0 marks which is noteworthy. Unless he is targeted by opposing teams the solid scoring rate is likely to continue in optimal weather conditions.

A consideration with his opportunity.

Sean Darcy

Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir did provide clarity over pre-season that Luke Jackson and Sean Darcy could flip roles throughout the 2023 season based on the opposition. There is increased risk for volatile scoring from both.
The lack of game scoring by Fremantle may also be a window for Longmuir to change the forward structure throughout the season.

High-risk selection.
