2023 AFL Fantasy: Five Players (Round 4)

Five Players is a weekly article to help you make informed decisions for season long AFL Fantasy.

Tom Stewart

Stewart missed just the one game for Geelong with a knee injury and returned on Sunday posting a monster score which has many considering making the move and upgrading at a defensive position. It is a very long season and Geelong have made it quite clear they will manage player health based on their success last season in doing so. The concern for those considering Stewart will be how much risk is associated with his knee which is clearly a guess for anyone at this stage but what we do know is the finish line is still 20+ weeks away.
The positive for Stewart is his strong scoring rate in optimal conditions which was last Sunday.

There are many things to consider before clicking.

Caleb Serong

Serong will continue to see strong usage in the middle of the ground for Fremantle and with Andrew Brayshaw seeing a little bit more attention this season the opportunities for Serong to post high fantasy numbers is certainly available. Serong has a very good inside and outside game that can keep the scoring ticking over at a strong rate. His role in the middle for Fremantle is extremely strong.

One to consider.

AFLRATINGS PLAYER NEWS

Bailey Smith

Smith is one of a number of mids at the Bulldogs that will see a fluctuation in role throughout the season, Marcus Bontempelli and Tom Liberatore should continue to see strong inside midfield usage if they remain healthy while others including Smith will challenge for time in the middle of the ground. Senior coach Luke Beveridge isn’t shy moving the magnets which provides a level of concern.

A consistent role as an inside midfielder isn’t there yet.

Callum Mills

The word out of Sydney throughout pre-season and within the last few weeks is that Callum Mills will provide flexibility to the team. Expect his role to change throughout the season providing opportunities to develop the playing list in key areas under senior coach John Longmire. Mills can play in defence, inside or outside midfield and even forward. From a fantasy perspective it may provide volatile scores but if there is one player that can maintain a strong average it is Mills.

On the radar especially at a lower salary.

Jacob van Rooyen

It was an exceptional debut from Jacob van Rooyen last week playing mostly forward and relieving Brodie Grundy in the ruck. His role in a strong team should provide decent opportunities to keep the fantasy scores ticking over. The favourable situation against West Coast this week missing several key players should be another opportunity to significantly increase his salary.

A genuine target to increase salary.
