Projected Leaders
This could be a wild Brownlow Medal count with multiple chances to win. Nick Daicos will likely be the main storyline throughout the count if he is rewarded with early votes in the season. A knee injury ended his H&A season in Round 21 which will result in zero votes from the final 4 games.
Christian Petracca is a very good chance to be right with Nick Daicos throughout the count. Marcus Bontempelli produced a quality season which included outstanding performances in losing games. Zak Butters was excellent through the middle part of the season and could produce a strong finish to the count.
It likely won’t take much for other players to become a legitimate chance to win if votes don’t go as projected. Those players include Caleb Serong*, Connor Rozee, Errol Gulden, Toby Greene, Jordan Dawson, Lachie Neale and Tim Taranto.
2023 BROWNLOW MEDAL PROJECTED VOTES
Nick Daicos
The 2023 Brownlow Medal count will likely revolve around Nick Daicos for most of the night. The critical part of his season relating to votes will be early having started the season across half-back where historically votes are not awarded for uncontested ball but his impact on games was certainly profound. The votes for Daicos should start to really flow when he was moved into the midfield. A knee injury ended his H&A season in Round 21 meaning he will receive zero votes from the final 4 games.
Zak Butters
Strong performances through a midfield role at Port Adelaide has put Zak Butters in a decent position to win the 20233 Brownlow Medal. He’ll likely fall behind early in the count but a strong middle part of the season and an exceptional finish to his year should have him well placed to receive multiple maximum voting games.Â
Marcus Bontempelli
Marcus Bontempelli was outstanding in 2023 playing as a pure midfielder. He’ll likely be rewarded with maximum votes in several games across the season while also having strong impact in narrow losing games where he could receive votes. Bontempelli is likely to be near the top of the leaderboard in the final stages of the count. Â
Christian Petracca
It won’t take much for Christian Petracca to find his way to the top of the leaderboard on Brownlow night. He will likely poll votes in a healthy number of games across the season. A move to a forward/midfield role late in the H&A season may hinder his vote potential.
Caleb Serong*
Despite a poor season from Fremantle Caleb Serong was a standout through his pure midfield role. He’ll likely poll votes consistently across the season but a strong finish could elevate his position on the leaderboard late. He could surprise.
Connor Rozee
It was an outstanding season from Connor Rozee playing through the midfield at Port Adelaide. His ability to impact games will likely be rewarded on Brownlow night. Rozee is likely to finish strong.
Errol Gulden
It was an exceptional season from Errol Gulden at Sydney. His ability to win plenty of ball throughout the year will likely be rewarded on Brownlow night. Gulden is likely to have one of the better finishes to the count.
2023 BROWNLOW MEDAL PROJECTED VOTES
It is incredibly difficult to be completely accurate with each vote. With all games watched throughout the season and a flexible guideline on which type of player umpires award votes to there is a great deal of attention and thought given when distributing votes.
Good luck for the Brownlow count.
