Jye Caldwell Role

AFLRATINGS NEWS: Essendon midfielder Jye Caldwell has seen a reduction in centre bounce usage in recent games.

He was subbed out of the game in Q4 following a tackle to the ground in Round 19.

Caldwell subsequently passed a concussion test but was unable to return in the final few minutes of the game.  

He was used at 52.6% of team centre bounces in Round 19.

Last week Darcy Parish returned from injury and was used at 44.8% of team centre bounces, Caldwell was used at 34.5% in the same game. This included no usage in Q4 in a blowout loss. 

Dylan Shiel has been used at 55.7% of team centre bounces since he returned in Round 17, he was also used at 34.5% in Round 20. 

Jake Stringer was used at 72.4% of team centre bounces in Round 20 against St Kilda. 

Essendon won centre clearances 15-10 against the Saints (+5 differential).

Caldwell was used at 78.3% of team centre bounces between Rounds 15-18. 

Essendon recorded a net zero centre clearance differential over the same period, this included an 11-14 result (-3) in Round 18 against Melbourne without Max Gawn. 

Senior coach Brad Scott has been consistent across the season referencing winning the ball at the contest.

Scott reiterated following the Round 18 loss to Melbourne the willingness to mix up the centre bounce rotation when discussing Zach Merrett being tagged. 

He then added at the same time they want to share to load at centre bounces and would review how that looks moving forward.
