AFLRATINGS NEWS: Melbourne assistant coach Troy Chaplin has provided some thoughts on how the 2025 season may evolve for Max Gawn.
The addition of Tom Campbell during the off-season has added depth to the ruck position at Melbourne this season, Aidan Johnson (25) was also added to the squad via the 2024 AFL Draft.

Without Max Gawn in Saturday’s practice match against the Kangaroos Campbell was used at 87.0% of team centre bounces at the ruck position in the first three quarters.
In the final quarter Johnson was used at 87.5% of team centre bounces at the ruck position.
Following the game Chaplin acknowledged the extra depth at the ruck position which he said opens up the possibility of playing two at the same time this year.

Chaplin added that there may even be the possibility that the extra ruck depth may also allow for Gawn to be managed throughout the season.
Gawn averaged 19.1 disposals, 5.2 marks, 2.6 tackles and 34.0 hitouts from 21 games last season.
