AFL Trade News: Zak Butters

AFLRATINGS NEWS: Zak Butters has a huge decision ahead of the 2026 trade period.

He is a restricted free agent at the end of the 2026 season with Port Adelaide likely in a strong position to match any offer and force a rare trade situation.

Previous matched offers for free agents include Patrick Dangerfield moving from Adelaide to Geelong and Jeremy Cameron also moving to the Cats.

The number of high-end draft picks will be critical for any team willing to not only sign Zak Butters on a healthy contract but successfully complete a trade with Port Adelaide.

Butters has been active since the 2025 season ended with notable sightings with opposition players which increases attention on his pending decision next season.

The recent inflation on contracts for quality players has him in a great position to receive significant contract offers.

The best financial offer still may yet come from his existing club Port Adelaide, however the current consensus is that Butters will look to change clubs at the end of 2026.

Port Adelaide List Manager Jason Cripps recently said on Trade Radio the club will do everything to “fight and retain” Butters on a long term contract.

Butters was selected at pick 12 in the 2018 AFL Draft by Port Adelaide.

He has played 139 career games for the Power.
