AFLRATINGS NEWS: Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell will miss the start of the 2026 AFL season.
He fractured his finger in the State of Origin game on Saturday night.

Rowell underwent scans which confirmed the finger injury, he will undergo surgery.
He is expected to miss an extended period of time.
“Scans have shown a fracture in a finger on Matt’s left hand. After consulting with specialists this morning, the decision was made for Matt to undergo surgery this week,”
“A timeframe around his return to play will be determined following the operation.” Gold Coast Head Physiotherapist Andrew Weller.
Gold Coast play Geelong in their season opener on Friday March 6 at People First Stadium.

Rowell averaged 26.3 disposals, 1.6 marks and 8.6 tackles from 25 games in 2025.
