Sam Petrevski Seton

Sam Petrevski-Seton is set to continue his role as a defender in 2021, he moved into defence playing mostly across half-back for the 2020 H&A season.

In the off-season Kade Simpson retired, the Blues added Adam Saad as a running half-back as well as Zac Williams who has played most of his career across half-back but should move into the midfield.

Blues assistant coach Dale Amos confirmed the defensive role for Petrevski-Seton in late November, Amos also added that he could see him pinch hit through the midfield in the future.

“Watching Samo & his evolution, he’s now had a full 12 months playing as a defender & his game has really grown.”

“He was an instinctive outnumber type player who could use the ball really well, he’s added the contest & become much stronger in the contest, he’s also added the ability to be able to defend really well.”

“We’re comfortable with Samo being able to play a little bit deeper at stages which is the confidence we have in him now,”

“but I think in terms of moving forward you could see him being the type of player who plays that role that if we need a little bit of spark through the midfield you can just chuck him in there for 5 or 6 minutes & he’ll give you something.”

“I think his role down back is going to be really critical for us” Dale Amos.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Petrevski-Seton averaged 54.1pts from 16 games in 2020, he scored a season high 90pts in Round 16 against Sydney.

Identifying the Blues defensive set-up during the pre-season should provide clarity if there is any potential fantasy upside in Petrevski-Seton next season, he did average 75.7pts from his final 3 games of the 2020 season which is a small sample size.

With more of a licence to roam free across half-back Petrevski-Seton could be a sleeper in fantasy, he has shown already throughout his career he can accumulate disposals when placed in a prime position.

Working against Petrevski-Seton from a fantasy perspective will likely be Sam Docherty, the Blues also showed a want to move the ball faster out of defence in 2020 & moved to a lock the ball in their forward half type game plan.

Petrevski-Seton is worth a place on a pre-season watch-list in AFL Fantasy classic with his initial salary playing a large role on a decision starting him at Round 1, he’s a late round sleeper in 10 team standard draft leagues.
