Johnson is a highly touted midfielder, he was excited at the prospect of staying in WA & joining the Dockers.

“I think Freo are a young list and have a lot of players that are going to be stars,”

“Freo are definitely building toward something special in the future and to be a part of that is massive for me.” Johnson said.

Fremantle had secured the first draft pick in the 2nd round with a trade involving Gold Coast during the trade period, that allowed for a full day to consider offers for that pick but the Dockers eventually settled on taking Johnson.

“We were very excited when it became apparent that Matthew Johnson was a chance to slide through to our pick.”

“Whilst we rated him really highly, we also know we had to listen to what other clubs had to offer for that pick overnight, whether it was a trade or slide.” Fremantle EGM of Football Peter Bell.

2022 AFL Fantasy: Kai Lohmann

Johnson averaged 21.3 Disposals, 4.2 Marks & 5.7 Tackles from 6 games in the WAFL Colts in 2021, he played a mixture of league, reserves & colts throughout the year.

Fantasy Impact: Matthew Johnson is a very talented midfielder, he’s sharp around packs, has evasive skills & provides excellent delivery by foot.

He works well both on the inside & outside, his tackle pressure will be a feature.

The short term fantasy prospects should be pretty decent for Johnson, he is likely to feature at AFL level in 2022 albeit not instantly through heavy midfield usage.

The long term fantasy prospects appear to be excellent, he could turn into an accumulating type midfielder that has an excellent scoring output.

If Johnson makes the Round 1 team for Fremantle then he is a strong consideration for season long fantasy, his progress is a must watch over pre-season with a midfield spot opened up with the departure of Adam Cerra to Carlton.

He’s a late speculative selection in single season draft leagues, he’s certainly a priority in dynasty leagues.
