With the AFL set for a return Northern Territory could be in a position to host games with crowds in 2020, TIO Stadium in Darwin & TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs have been used by the AFL to host games in recent years.
Crowds attending games in this Covid-19 impacted 2020 AFL season have largely been dismissed as an option in the short term, the cost for the AFL and TV networks broadcasting from both NT venues would need to be taken in to consideration.
AFL Draft: Flipping the No.1 Pick
Northern Territory’s chief minister Michael Gunner told Sky News on Friday.
“You can play a footy game, you can have a crowd”
“It’s the dry season up here in Darwin, it’s a magic place to be.
“So for me, that’s a massive attraction I would’ve thought to anybody, including the AFL.”
It is expected the AFL will announce a plan for teams to return to training in the coming days, it is likely a 3 week training schedule will be implemented prior to the AFL resuming the 17 game H&A season in June or shortly thereafter.
