2023 AFL Fantasy: Five Players (Round 9)

Five Players is a weekly article to help you make informed decisions for season long AFL Fantasy.

Bailey Smith

Smith had an injury interrupted pre-season spending a significant amount of time away from the main group. He has missed two games already this season and hasn’t seen any type of strong centre bounce usage which has delivered inconsistent scores. Adam Treloar has been used at a strong rate at centre bounce and is now sidelined for the upcoming period which leaves a decent amount of opportunities available which are likely to be taken up by Smith, Caleb Daniel and Jack Macrae.

A combination of risk and reward.

Dom Sheed

It was a strong return from Sheed last week in a midfield role recording 29 disposals. He was used at 70.4% of team centre bounces which could possibly be maintained for some time given the current injury concerns at West Coast. The salary for Sheed does represent value especially if his inside midfield role is strong. A healthy West Coast team could represent a change in roles for Sheed but that won’t be the case for an extended period.

Decent opportunity.

Stephen Coniglio

Coniglio has been quietly putting together a strong fantasy season with low ownership. His usage through the midfield and at centre bounces has been quite solid and is expected to be maintained under new GWS senior coach Adam Kingsley. Coniglio is averaging 29.8 disposals which is currently his best season average over his career and he has an ability to hit the scoreboard to keep the fantasy scores ticking over.

An option for any forward roster.

Luke Davies-Uniacke

It was a great start to the season for LDU until his late withdrawal pre-game and subsequent missed game through injury. Nth Melbourne haven’t performed well at all with the disruption to their engine room over the last few weeks. Senior coach Alastair Clarkson now has an opportunity to inject youth into the team for future benefit which could place pressure on roles within the team. Davies-Uniacke is one player that should continue to see strong inside midfield usage but with balance of the team changing it may not provide enough support for a strong fantasy scoring output.

Likely better options elsewhere.

Callum Mills

Sydney have been hit by injuries to key players at either end of the ground this year which has resulted in role adjustments for several players. Callum Mills has been used in defence at times this season to cover for injuries which has impacted his scoring output. A more settled team at the Swans would allow for more opportunities in the midfield which has been the case recently. Be aware of the potential to move away from a midfield role at times and especially if injuries strike again. The drop in salary has been significant for Mills this season and is now in the value range.

Decent opportunity.
