2023 AFL Fantasy: Five Players (Round 8)

Adam Cerra

The centre bounce rotation for Carlton this season hasn’t been consistent mainly through player availability issues, while Cerra has been used at a decent rate across the season his weekly usage has been inconsistent. The scoring for Cerra has been excellent the last couple of weeks but can be linked to the opposition game style. In Round 6 St Kilda built a wall across their own D50 which led to multiple Carlton players accumulating a high number of uncontested ball trying to find a way inside F50. Last week in Round 7 was open season for any mid to accumulate strong numbers against a depleted West Coast team. There are ongoing adjustments being made to the Carlton midfield to which Cerra could benefit but more of a sample size is likely required before committing to a significant investment. The breakeven for Cerra is certainly noteworthy but his scoring output could still remain inconsistent with Patrick Cripps and his strong clearance numbers.

Noah Anderson

Noah Anderson has moved into the No.1 midfield slot at Gold Coast with Touk Miller sidelined through injury. His scoring rate should be healthy against poor performing teams and likely good enough against quality performing teams. Anderson has a strong balance in his game and can mix it up inside the contest. There is enough evidence over his career to prove that he can sustain his output without Miller. Targeting his bye also makes sense.

Jack Steele

The scoring rate for Steele has been quite healthy in his 4 games so far this season. His role changed on return from injury following a slow start to more of a negating role on Patrick Cripps but apart from that he’s been quite solid. The run of games upcoming for Steele is decent enough to consider but keep in mind his early bye which is just now a few weeks away. The midfield usage for Steele will remain strong while his scoring rate remains quite solid under new coach Ross Lyon.

Sound investment.

Harry Perryman

GWS have a number of players that can win a significant amount of ball, Perryman on his day will produce strong numbers if he has the opportunity. However if his role moves away from a ball first priority to a role holding off opposition mids his scoring rate could be inconsistent. Perryman can produce strong tackle numbers which can increase his scoring output quite quickly but that could be an unreliable platform to produce strong fantasy numbers that are required at this stage of the season.

Other mids preferred.

Will Setterfield

Without setting off alarms on Setterfield senior coach Brad Scott has stated he wants more flexibility through the midfield as they continue to evaluate and grow their playing list. Jake Stringer was used at a strong rate at centre bounces last week while Dylan Shiel spent a stack of time forward, Zach Merrett was another that was impacted. The short turnaround last week likely negatively impacted several players including Setterfield while Geelong were quite outstanding. Keep an eye on roles this week at the Bombers especially Setterfield, it feels like change may be on the way at some stage. Hopefully a fresh week to crack in again with those strong tackle numbers.
