AFL Stats: 2019 Qtrs Won

It won’t be a surprise to anyone that the 2019 H&A season Top 5 were all ranked highly for quarters won, what may be a surprise to a few was the eventual runner-up last season GWS won only 49.0% of quarters played (Rank 9).

Essendon won only 44.6% of quarters played in 2019 (Rank 13), Hawthorn (Rank Eq.6) & Port Adelaide (Rank Eq.6) both missed Finals in 2019 however they were ranked in the Top 8 along with Sydney (Rank 8).

Geelong & Richmond were ranked at the top for 1st Qtrs won in 2019, each team won 68.0% of quarters played in 2019.

St Kilda & Carlton were slow starters last season, Final 8 teams Essendon & the Western Bulldogs each won only 39.1% of opening Qtrs played.

St Kilda adjusted well after QT to be the leading team winning 68.2% of 2nd Qtrs played last season, the Tigers again were tough to overcome early in games winning 68.0% of 2nd Qtrs played.

The drop off after the QT break for Gold Coast was alarming, the Suns won only 18.2% of 2nd Qtrs played in 2019.

After the HT break Brisbane were the strongest team in the AFL winning 70.8% of 3rd Qtrs played, the only time the Giants were ranked in the top 3 (per Qtr) was in the 3rd Qtr (Win Pct: 61.5%).

St Kilda were strong team after the QT break but were equally as poor coming off the main break in 2019, the Saints won only 22.7% of 3rd Qtrs played.

Again Brisbane were ranked No.1 this time winning 62.5% of 4th Qtrs played last season, Richmond were the only team to be ranked in the top 3 each Qtr (4th Qtr Win Pct: 60.0%).

The win percentage at Melbourne declined in each Qtr played last season, the Demons won 45.5% of 1st Qtrs played however by the last Qtr that percentage dropped to 27.3%.
