Injury Update: Nic Newman

Carlton defender Nic Newman sustained an elbow injury in Round 1, the injury has been diagnosed as a dislocated elbow.

Newman has undergone surgery, recovery is anticipated to be around 8-10 weeks however he should resume running in a week to maintain fitness.

“Amazingly, he came back on and had pretty good function… given the break, we decided to get surgery on that lateral ligament in his elbow,”

“We feel it’s going to be an 8-10 week injury, so we feel he should be back maybe when we resume, or very soon after when we resume.”

“The good thing for Nic is he will only miss running for a week, so he won’t lose any physical condition at all.” Carlton Director of High Performance, Andrew Russell.

Newman recorded 13 Disposals, 2 Marks & 2 Tackles in Round 1 against Richmond.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

If the AFL resumes at June 1 then Newman is questionable to be available for Round 2, any further delays beyond a June 1 return enhances the chances for Newman to be available for Round 2.

Newman will likely play a small lock down defender role in 2020 which will likely result in volatile scoring, he’s a pass in AFL Fantasy classic in this type of role.
