Taking a look at the Top 25 Defender ownership following Round 1 some genuine intelligence has been revealed, with the shortened season reduced to just 17 games per team in 2020 fantasy coaches have little time to adjust in the early part of the season.

Targeting highly owned players from top ranked teams may provide some type of scoring security but that won’t help in finding enough unique options to outscore those teams by the end of the season, using ownership numbers we can devise a plan for finding specific players that may have a longer term scoring edge in order to deliver a significant advantage.

Four Defenders were highly owned by the Top 25 ranked teams in Round 1, Sam Docherty (96%) was an obvious choice at a bargain salary while the midfield usage for Dan Houston (88%) was undeniable.

Fantasy: Round 1 Power v Suns CBA’s

On his return to football following heart issues Dylan Roberton (72%) failed to impress in Round 1, his role at times matching up against a key Nth Melbourne tall does raise questions about his scoring ability in 2020.

Jarrod Brander (72%) provided some salary relief in Round 1 for fantasy coaches, he did deliver with a decent score but his job security remains questionable.

The Top 3 ranked teams all started with Docherty, Houston, Roberton & Brander, all of these players were significantly higher owned in the Top 25 compared to the overall competition ownership.

Obviously with just Round 1 completed the highest scoring players propelled teams with the right mix to the top section of overall rank in AFL Fantasy, the sample size is very small but identifying which unique players assisted in the one week high rank can also assist those fantasy coaches now in a chase for the top spot.

One such player that attracted high ownership in Round 1 was Jeremy Howe (48%), owned by just 6% of the competition Howe scored an impressive 110pts in a Collingwood team that crushed the Bulldogs.

Each of the Top 6 teams owned Jeremy Howe in Round 1, he will likely be a popular trade-in target in Round 2 but resisting the urge to trade him in will provide a different path.

A few teams in the Top 25 were a touch unlucky not to be higher ranked, Brodie Smith was 28% owned but scored just 35pts in an injury interrupted Round 1. The CBA numbers for Smith may give those owners some confidence heading into Round 2.

Fantasy: Round 1 Crows v Swans CBA’s

Jack Crisp was 20% owned by the Top 25 in Round 1, his score of just 59pts was impacted by the inability of the Bulldogs to enter Inside 50 at a high rate in the first half.

Both Howe & Crisp are owned by 2 fantasy coaches in the Top 6.
