St Kilda Update: Jack Hayes

St Kilda will continue the debate over playing an extra tall.

Paddy Ryder returned on Sunday and was used at 65.7% of centre bounces.

The Saints match committee last week considered an extra tall with the return of Ryder but also wanted to maintain a high level of forward half pressure which may have seen Jack Hayes omitted.

The decision was made to trial the extra tall, St Kilda defeated Richmond by 33 points at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

Senior coach Brett Ratten provided insight via Sportsday on Monday into a tough week for the match committee in the lead up to that game.

“It pretty much took the whole week to decide,”

“We were second in pressure in our front half, sort of changing the mix was a bit of a risk but we had to trial it to see what it looked like.”

“We wanted to get a bit of a snapshot,”

“(Jack) Hayes played brilliant against Collingwood and was pretty solid against Fremantle.”

“We wanted to have a look at it,”

“There were moments that it worked and then there were moments that it didn’t.”

“Everybody in the match committee room was 50-50 (to go with the tall set up or not) and we were all split a bit but we wanted to trial it and have a look at it.”

“It will be something that we might do going forward but we might go back to just the 3-man (set up) as well.” Ratten said.
