Rory Laird Role

AFLRATINGS NEWS: There is further clarity on the role for Rory Laird prior to the start of the 2024 AFL season. 

Laird said on Tuesday (via SENSA) that he won’t play much as a forward this year but will pinch-hit at times when required. 

This aligns with recent comments made by Adelaide assistant coach Nathan van Berlo.

When specifically asked about Laird’s role van Berlo did confirm that he’ll spend more time ahead of the ball in 2024.

He added that Laird is a genuine inside midfielder and has previously spent time across half-forward when he’s received opposition attention.

Laird added on Tuesday that his role forward won’t be substantial but will be more forward than what he has done previously which will add flexibility to the team.

Last week against West Coast Laird said he started some centre bounces as a forward.  

Laird averaged 29.0 disposals, 3.0 marks and 8.0 tackles from 22 games in 2023.
