Tom Mitchell is likely to miss the entire 2019 season, he suffered a leg injury Friday morning during a tackling drill at pre-season training.

Mitchell is set to undergo surgery prior to his rehabilitation, Hawthorn released a statement a short time ago.

“For Tom to suffer an injury like this is incredibly disappointing for both him and our footy club,”

“He will undergo surgery over the weekend and as a result will most likely miss the 2019 season.” Hawthorn GM Football Graham Wright.

Mitchell averaged 35.3 Disposals last season for the Hawks, he won the 2018 Brownlow Medal recording 28 votes.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

The Mitchell injury is devastating news for those that play season long fantasy, the No.1 player from last season was likely to be a popular selection at Round 1 despite his high price tag.

Unfortunately injuries are a part of the game, players likely to benefit from the absence of Mitchell are Chad Wingard, Liam Shiels and if he can complete a full season Jaeger O’Meara.

Emerging players such as James Worpel should also see an increase in midfield usage in 2019.
