AFL Fantasy 2020: Top 25 Midfielder Ownership & Trading Strategy

With the completion of Round 1 fantasy coaches will start to formulate a plan for a successful 2020 season, pulling the trigger on strategic trades that are beneficial to your overall team rank are extremely important especially in finding the path of least resistance.

Taking a look at the Top 25 Midfielder ownership following Round 1 some genuine intelligence has been revealed, with the shortened season reduced to just 17 games per team in 2020 fantasy coaches have little time to adjust in the early part of the season.

Targeting highly owned players from top ranked teams may provide some type of scoring security but that won’t help in finding enough unique options to outscore those teams by the end of the season, using ownership numbers we can devise a plan for finding specific players that may have a longer term scoring edge in order to deliver a significant advantage.

AFL Fantasy 2020: Top 25 Defender Ownership & Trading Strategy

Five Midfielders were highly owned by the Top 25 ranked teams in Round 1, the 2019 AFL Draft No.1 pick Matthew Rowell was selected in the starting 8 by 96.0% of teams.

Tom Mitchell (88.0%) returning from a serious leg injury was far too much value to ignore, Marlion Pickett not playing a game in the 2019 H&A season provided a significant bargain at a starting salary of $170K.

Lachie Neale (68.0%) recorded 26 Disposals & 10 Tackles on his way to 108pts in Round 1, he attended a game high 96.2% of CBA’s against the Hawks and provided a great start for those coaches in the Top 25 that started with him.

Fantasy: Round 1 Hawks v Lions CBA’s

Jack Viney was owned by just 9.2% of total AFL Fantasy coaches in Round 1, there is no surprise that he was owned by 60.0% of the Top 25 after posting 132pts in Round 1.

All Top 5 ranked teams started with Rowell, Mitchell & Pickett at Round 1, 6 of the Top 25 teams owned the combination of Rowell, Mitchell, Pickett, Neale & Viney including the No.1 ranked team.

Expect Neale & Viney to be a Round 2 target for many coaches, for those now in a chase of those highly ranked teams it might be wise to look for lower owned players in order to find an easier path to the top of the leaderboard.

There were quite a few elite midfielders owned by less than 50% of the Top 25 at Round 1, those players include Patrick Cripps (40.0%), Stephen Coniglio (40.0%), Jack Macrae (28.0%) & Andrew Gaff (20.0%). All of those players have the ability to put up premium scores & influence the standings in the Top 25.

Stephen Coniglio was owned by just 1 team in the Top 12, he was owned by 9 teams ranked 13-25. There will be plenty of movement at the top of the leaderboard if Lachie Neale &/or Jack Viney fail in Round 2.
