Fantasy: The role for Brodie Kemp in 2021

Brodie Kemp will look to develop his game as a defender over the pre-season, he was selected at pick 17 in the 2019 AFL Draft & is yet to make his AFL debut for Carlton.

Kemp ruptured his ACL in July just months prior to the 2019 national draft, he has spent the last 12 months recovering & building up to the start of his 2021 campaign.

“He won’t necessarily be absolutely flying at the start of pre-season, we’ve taken a really slow approach with Brodie but we’re really excited about him being able to complete a full pre-season & have himself in good position by the time the start of the season comes around.” Blues assistant coach Dale Amos.

Kemp averaged 20 Disposals & 6.5 marks in the 2019 AFL U18 Championships, he’ll initially establish his game in defence at the Blues.

“Brodie will train down back & at least playing wise will spend the majority of this year playing as a defender.”

“In his TAC Cup year he spent a fair bit of time through the midfield as well as playing down back and had success in both areas, he seems like the type of player that can probably in time do both.”

“But we feel like in terms of his development & even for us as a team the ability to be able to have that extra tall defender who can give us some coverage down there is probably something that’s going to really help us as a team,”

“but we think it’s going to really help Brodie as an individual to be able to learn from Jacob Weitering, Lachie Plowman, Caleb Marchbank, Liam Jones is going to be a great thing for his career to be able start to establish himself down there.” Dale Amos.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

The Blues will still be cautious with Kemp over the pre-season, he’s just 18 months post ACL surgery & yet to make his AFL debut.

Kemp was an elite tall defender/forward in his U18 year, he’s an exciting long term prospect for Carlton.

From a fantasy perspective young key defenders don’t really offer much in the way scoring output, once Kemp can establish himself in the team the scoring may start to evolve but initially volatility may be an issue.

Kemp is one to watch over the pre-season, long term he could move into a midfield role which provides enormous fantasy upside when that move occurs.

At a low salary Kemp will be a popular target in AFL Fantasy classic over the pre-season if he is on track to debut in Round 1, he’s likely a pass in 10 team standard draft leagues. Kemp should already be stashed on your bench in keeper/dynasty leagues.
