Fantasy: The role for Sam Flanders in 2021

Sam Flanders will be looking to move up the ground more in 2021, after an injury interrupted 2020 season he’s set to improve with increased midfield usage this season.

Flanders was well below the fitness required at AFL level “due to a couple of little niggles” last season according to Suns senior coach Stuart Dew on Thursday via Sportsday, it was a “learning curve” Dew added.

Flanders has put the time in over summer & is ready to hit the 2021 season running.

“From the exposure (in 2020) he’s taken a lot from that, he’s gone away over the summer & got super fit.” Stuart Dew.

Flanders was rarely sighted through the midfield in 2020 from his 5 games, 2021 is likely to be a different story.

“He’s certainly our top quartile in running which gives us some real flexibility to not just say well he’s a forward pocket, we can actually push him up through the midfield as well.” Dew added.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Flanders averaged 31.2pts from 5 games in 2020, he scored a season high 41pts in Round 13 against Carlton.

It was a disappointing introduction from a fantasy perspective for Flanders, however the benefit will be a very low salary to begin the 2021 season with.

Flanders was an excellent ball winner throughout his junior career, with improved fitness & increased midfield opportunities he should have good upside fantasy potential in 2021.

Flanders is worth considering at Round 1 in AFL Fantasy classic, he is very good value based on his starting salary.

He’s likely a pass in 10 team standard draft leagues.
