There is clarity on the Dylan Shiel role for the 2022 AFL season.
He will be playing through the midfield according to Essendon GM of Football Josh Mahoney.
With the emergence of Darcy Parish in a pure midfield role last year and return from key injuries to Shiel, Jye Caldwell and Andrew McGrath the available spots through the middle of the ground are limited in 2022.
Mahoney confirmed Shiel would play a midfield role but also explained the expansion of players through the Essendon engine room.
“Our midfield group is well established.”
“They’ve played a lot of footy together now.”
AFL News on Twitter @aflratings “We look forward to having Dylan
Shiel back in there playing a full season, Andy McGrath a full season.”
“We saw Jake Stringer go in there last year,”
GAME DAY LIVE on Twitter @aflratings_Live “We think we’re adding a lot of number of players that
can run through that position which is very important, we see that with the best teams they have eight or nine guys run through that.” he said.
Shiel averaged 19.4 Disposals, 2.1 Marks & 2.9 Tackles from 8 games in 2021.
Fantasy Impact: Dylan Shiel averaged 66.0pts from 8 games in 2021, he scored a season high 86pts in the preliminary final loss to the Bulldogs.
His season was severely interrupted by injury.
The role in the midfield this season should be strong for Shiel but it is important to note the Bombers may be looking to spread out the load through the middle of the ground.

Shiel is likely a pass in season long fantasy to begin the season, there are likely better options at a lower salary point that can provide a better ROI.
If he’s still available in the late stages in single season draft leagues he may be worth a selection, his ceiling is strong in favourable match-ups.
