Phillipou is an athletic midfielder that can also impact forward of the ball.
St Kilda Head of List Management James Gallagher provided a brief update after Phillipou was selected.
“He is tall, powerful midfielder who also has the ability to push forward and take a mark, and is a great athlete who performed outstandingly for both the Eagles and South Australia this year.”
“We look forward to seeing Mattaes grow as a player and person at St Kilda and we’re excited to see what his future holds.” Gallagher said.
Phillipou also averaged 16.8 disposals, 3.5 marks and 3.3 tackles from 4 games in the 2022 U18 National Championships.

Fantasy Impact: Mattaes Phillipou will add quality depth to the midfield and forward area of the ground for St Kilda.
He is an athletic type and is quite evasive in congestion, his height allows him to move forward and create favourable marking situations.
The short term fantasy prospects are likely quite good, he should see multiple opportunities at AFL level in 2023 in an outside midfield type role. He could also line-up forward of the ball throughout the year and move up into general play.

His long term prospects are likely good, there is still plenty of development remaining as he is far from the finished product. It is possible he turns into a well balanced midfielder that can play both on the inside and outside.
Season long fantasy: Phillipou is a consideration if he is named at Round 1, when he makes his AFL debut there is the likelihood it won’t be for the short term. His scoring output should be decent.
Single season draft leagues: He’s likely a late round speculative option in single season draft leagues.
DFS: He’ll be a target early in the season especially in favourable forward situations.
