Injury Update: Joe Daniher

Essendon key forward Joe Daniher is unlikely to be available for Round 2 as he tries to regain fitness from ongoing groin issues, he returned to training yesterday but was very limited.

Essendon coach John Worsfold was not so optimistic on a return for Daniher once the AFL season resumes on June 11.

“When I look at what Joe is doing at the moment, it is not enough to say he’ll be ready for Round 2”

“He’s obviously a fair way off what we would say is the intensity to be ready to play so we’ll just keep progressing him up and that will take care of itself.”

“The next step for him will be getting to the point where he can join in training with the group and then there’s usually a couple of weeks required where he is in full training with the group before we would say someone’s back ready to play.” Essendon coach John Worsfold.

Daniher averaged 12.8 Disposals, 5.5 Marks, & 1.8 Goals from 4 games in 2019, he has played in 24.4% of games since the beginning of the 2018 H&A season.

AFL FANTASY TAKE

Daniher is a significant piece of the puzzle for the Essendon forward line, until he returns expect the Bombers to continue with a smaller type forward set up.

Even though Jake Stringer was named in the forward line in Round 1 he played a significant role in the midfield matching up mostly on Nat Fyfe, Devon Smith was pushed forward as a result and was used mostly in a pressure forward role.

Fantasy: Round 1 Bombers v Dockers CBA’s

Jacob Townsend was able to hit the scoreboard early in Round 1, his role without Daniher in the Essendon team will likely remain the same as a marking tall forward.

Daniher is not considered a target in season long fantasy.
