Injury Update: Nic Newman

Injury Update: Nic Newman

Nic Newman has been placed on a modified training program, there is inflammation behind his kneecap.

Newman was sidelined last season with a patella tendon injury, the Blues will likely be very cautious in the short term to see if the inflammation settles down.

Newman is set to miss the start of the 2021 H&A season, Blues Director of High Performance Andrew Russell provided an update on Monday.

“His patella tendon looks really good, which is an injury he had last year, but the back of the kneecap is a bit inflamed at the moment. We’re still deciding what that means, how long training he’s going to miss.”

“We need a bit more information to find out how long it will settle down, he will be playing footy but it probably won’t be at the start of the season.” Andrew Russell via Carlton media.

Newman played just 2 games in 2020, he did not return after a season ending injury early in Round 2.

He scored 49pts in Round 1.

Newman had completed the majority of his pre-season requirements, he won’t be available until fully cleared by the Carlton medical team.

The role for Newman in 2021 when he returns will impact his fantasy scoring output, if he’s in more of a lock down type role in defence then his scoring could be quite volatile. A more of a ball winning defensive type role would be ideal, but with Sam Docherty likely to assume that role again this season it does bring into question the likely scoring output for Newman.

Newman is a pass in AFL Fantasy classic, it may be wise to let others take the risk on him in 10 team standard draft leagues.
