The 2021 H&A season is set to begin on March 18, @aflratingsPete ranks the Top 10 Defenders under $300K in AFL Fantasy classic.Â
The following list is a balanced opinion of which players to target throughout the 2021 H&A season, it doesn’t necessarily associate a high rank with a potential early game in the season. The comments are important to acknowledge; ability, playing role & potential scoring output have an influence on the rank.Â
1.Lachie Jones (Port Adelaide) $240K
Jones is certainly a big unit, he was selected at pick 16 in the 2020 AFL Draft. He will likely play a half-back type role early in his career at Port Adelaide & should have decent fantasy scoring ability, unfortunately for Jones he may have to wait a while with the current depth at the Power.Â
Season Projection: 60
2. Harry Sharp (Brisbane) $186K DEF/MID
Sharp has entered the AFL at the perfect time, his elite endurance has him well placed to be a valuable long term asset for the Lions. He was selected at pick 43 in the 2020 AFL Draft, he did see some minutes in the AAMI Community series. Brisbane senior coach Chris Fagan has been bullish on Sharp who is in his final year of high school in 2021, he offers a point of difference for the Lions with the potential for a debut likely at some stage this year.
Season Projection: 55

3. Will Hamill (Adelaide) $288K
Hamill made his AFL debut last season & showed plenty of fantasy potential, if he can slot into a half-back role at the Crows for most of the year then his value is likely high. Hamill has elite kicking skills & enough pace to be a valuable asset for the Crows, he should see plenty of opportunities this season.
Season Projection: 55
4. Josh Worrell (Adelaide) $170K DEF/FWD
Worrell is still pretty raw in his development at the Crows, he was selected at pick 28 in the 2019 AFL Draft. His pre-season has been very solid, his role as an intercepting defender was clearly noteworthy in match-simulation. Adelaide are still early in a rebuild phase, that may provide more than a few opportunities this season.
Season Projection: 50

5. Buku Khamis (Western Bulldogs) $170K
We are likely to see Khamis make his AFL debut at some point this year, it may even be early. He’ll likely play a defensive role at the Bulldogs, he has a strong marking ability & elite kicking skills. The fantasy output for Khamis could be decent if he can play as a loose intercepting type.Â
Season Projection: 50
6. Kieren Briggs (GWS Giants) $170K DEF/FWD
Briggs appears to be second choice right now in the mind of Giants senior coach Leon Cameron to begin the season with Matt Flynn named to make his AFL debut, Briggs played well according to Cameron in the AAMI Community Series. In a solo ruck situation Briggs is monster value, in any type of dual ruck set-up his output is somewhat limited. Keep Briggs well & truly on your radar.Â
Season Projection: 65 as clear No.1 ruck, 45 (dual ruck set-up)

7. Tom Highmore (St Kilda) $182K
Only recently added to the St Kilda list Highmore is a chance to play early in the season, with the long term injury to James Frawley an opportunity is available but there is no guarantee. Highmore can play as a loose intercepting type, hopefully he can play that role rather than being individually matched-up against key forwards.
Season Projection: 50
8. Jacob Koschitzke (Hawthorn) $170K
Koschitzke moved to a forward role over the pre-season, his early career at Hawthorn has been hit by injuries. He was outstanding in the AAMI Community Series kicking 6 Goals in a favourable match-up against Nth Melbourne. Koschitzke looks likely to play in Round 1, a decent early ROI is expected.Â
Season Projection: 50

9. Will Gould (Sydney) $170K
The added benefit for fantasy coaches not seeing Gould debut last season was the discount to begin the 2021 season, with Callum Mills moving into the midfield this season an opportunity was available in defence but that appears to be now taken by Braeden Campbell. Gould should provide a decent fantasy output once we see him play at AFL level, hopefully it is sooner rather than later.Â
Season Projection: 50
10. Tyson Goldsack (Port Adelaide) $170K
Goldsack joined Port Adelaide in the off-season coming out of retirement from the AFL, he provides extra depth to a strong Port Adelaide team & has the ability to play forward or back. A knee injury has sidelined Goldsack early in the year, if he were to make his Port Adelaide debut at AFL level he is an instant trade-in target.Â
Season Projection: 60
