Sam Hayes is on the radar to make an AFL debut in 2022, without guaranteeing a spot in the team alongside Scott Lycett new Port Adelaide midfield coach Brett Montgomery was optimistic on the prospects for Hayes.
He is yet to make his AFL debut, he was selected at pick 47 in the 2017 AFL Draft.
Montgomery provided an update on the progress for Hayes on Wednesday.
From Sam’s “point of view, he’s deserving of an opportunity, he’s got a very very good ruckman in front of him in Scott Lycett.”

“But he’s done enough, he’s shown enough, he’s passionate enough and puts in the yards that when that opportunity presents we just have to go to him, we have to give him that chance.”
“Really like the way he’s started pre-season.”
“He’s just got to show us a little bit more when that opportunity fronts up & we’ve got to have the confidence in playing him.” Montgomery said.
Montgomery also mentioned Dante Visentini at the ruck position and said he could “just shock a few.”

Fantasy Impact: Sam Hayes is a very talented ruck currently sitting behind Scott Lycett for an opportunity, Montgomery wasn’t willing to say that Port Adelaide will change structure & move to a dual ruck set-up in 2022.
For now it’s likely a waiting games for Hayes, but keep Dante Visentini well & truly on your fantasy radar for the future.

Hayes would be a strong consideration if he made his debut in Round 1 or was even on the cusp of making an early season debut, he provides plenty of salary relief & would be a strong play to exceed value.
He’s a pass in single season draft leagues, keep him on your watch list if Scott Lycett does miss games for a waiver claim.
