Fremantle opted to take Benning in the national draft rather than leaving him available in the pre-season draft.
“Essendon had a pick in the pre-season draft and had interviewed Roy twice, had they picked him in that pre-season draft, we would have had no ability to match,”
“We just wanted to take any risk out of him going to another club and just pick him ourselves.”
“We were desperate to have a developing ruck/forward and we think he’s going to be a really important player.” Fremantle Head of Player Personnel David Walls said post-draft.

2022 AFL Fantasy: Harvey Harrison
Benning averaged 11.2 Disposals, 2.2 Marks, 3.2 Tackles & 17.0 Hit Outs in the WAFL Colts in 2021.
Fantasy Impact: Eric Benning will add ruck depth at the Dockers, he’s an exciting raw prospect that has plenty of growth opportunities.
He’s athletic with high agility, he’s also a strong mark & has good game awareness.
The short term fantasy prospects for Benning are likely very limited unless injuries impact significantly in 2022 at Fremantle, he needs plenty of development prior to being ready for AFL level.
The longer term prospects could be quite healthy, there is upside scoring potential available based on a primary role as a ruck, but with Sean Darcy as the No.1 ruck his scoring output could be volatile.
Benning is likely a pass in season long fantasy at Round 1, it’s worth monitoring his progress for any potential opportunities in 2022.
He’s a pass in single season draft leagues, he’s a late round speculative option in dynasty leagues. The payoff may be a long time in waiting.
